PARIS – Karim Benzema, former Real Madrid player, was found guilty by a French court Wednesday of charges of conspiring to cover up a teammate in a sex tape case, a scandal that barred Benzema from joining the French football team for more than five years.
Benzema, 33, was given a one-year suspended sentence and a fine of 75,000 euros, or about $ 84,000.
Benzema was accused of helping four other men destroy Mathieu Valbuena, a team-mate of the French team, over an intimate video taken on Valbuena’s mobile phone.
Benzema always denies what he claims. He is preparing for the Real Madrid Champions League match later Wednesday’s match against him Sheriff Tiraspol and he did not go to court to decide.
